Legal cannabis has become part of the modern travel experience, especially in states like Nevada, California, and Colorado. But for tourists new to the scene, stepping into a dispensary can be exciting—and a little confusing. Here’s what every visitor should know before walking through those glass doors.
Before You Step Inside
Do bring valid ID. Every dispensary will ask for government-issued identification. You must be 21 or older to purchase recreational cannabis (or 18 with a valid medical card, depending on the state).
Do research on local laws first. Each state—and sometimes even each city—has its own rules on purchase limits, consumption areas, and hours of operation. For instance, California allows adults 21+ to carry up to 28.5 grams of flower and 8 grams of concentrate, while Colorado limits public consumption entirely.
Don’t assume it’s legal everywhere. Crossing from one state to another with cannabis is still a federal offense, even between two legal states. Keep your purchases where you bought them.
Inside the Dispensary
Do ask questions. Budtenders are trained to guide you through strains, edibles, tinctures, and vapes. If you’re a first-timer, ask about potency and onset times.
Do bring cash or a debit card. Because cannabis remains illegal at the federal level, some banks still restrict credit transactions. ATMs are often available on-site.
Don’t use products on the premises unless it’s allowed. In most states, consuming cannabis inside or outside the store is prohibited. Nevada is an exception, where certain licensed lounges in Las Vegas permit on-site use.
Don’t take photos without permission. Respect the privacy of customers and staff—not every dispensary allows photography inside.
After You Buy
Do store products safely. Keep them sealed and in original packaging, ideally in your luggage or the trunk of a car. Open container laws for cannabis work similarly to alcohol laws in many states.
Do plan transportation in advance. Never drive high. Cannabis can slow reaction time and affect coordination. Use a rideshare, public transit, or a designated driver if you plan to consume.
Don’t mix with alcohol. Combining both increases impairment and may lead to unpredictable effects — not a great idea for sightseeing.
Lodging, Lounges, and Air Travel
Do check hotel and rental policies. Even in legal states, hotels and Airbnbs may prohibit smoking or cannabis possession on their property. Always ask before lighting up.
Do visit consumption lounges where legal. These venues are popping up in Las Vegas and parts of California, giving tourists a legal and social space to enjoy responsibly.
Don’t take cannabis to the airport. TSA operates under federal law, which still classifies cannabis as illegal. Leave your stash behind before entering security.
Keep It Legal, Keep It Fun
Visiting a dispensary should be a memorable part of your trip — not a stressful one. Bring your ID, follow local laws, and consume responsibly. Respect the rules of the state you’re in, and you’ll walk away with a safe, enjoyable experience.
